Developing Presentation Skills

While confident public speaking is a crucial skill, it’s also an incredibly common fear. Ormond Beach schools believe that equipping young children with strong speaking and presentation skills can set them up for success, both professionally and academically. We have a few tips to help your child feel prepared, relaxed, and confident during his school presentations!

Be Prepared

Students often believe that they don’t need much preparation, especially if their presentation is about something they love or know well. However, if they don’t thoroughly plan out their presentation beforehand, it’ll be easy for them to fall off track. Help your child by working with him to plan out what he will say. Create flashcards with notes outlining his main talking points.

Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse

If your child’s first time presenting is in front of his class, this could be a source of anxiety. He may worry about stumbling over his words or forgetting something important. But he does not need to have these concerns if he’s practiced his speech before the big day! Gather a few family members or close friends of your child, and explain that everyone is there to be a supportive audience! Encourage your child to go over his presentation until he feels comfortable with it. By the time he gets to class, he’ll have no reason to worry.

Practice Technique

A good presentation isn’t only about what you say — it’s about how you say it and whether your body language demonstrates confidence. Help your child get comfortable with making eye contact, standing up straight, and speaking loudly and clearly. He will appear more calm, collected, and confident in front of his peers.
