Kid-Friendly Rosary Craft

What’s one of the best ways to help children practice their motor skills? Crafts! Simple projects are a great way to give them a more concrete understanding of abstract concepts. Volusia Catholic schools know that the rosary can be confusing for children, but this rosary craft can be a great way to help them understand it. And the best part? All you need are pipe cleaners and beads!

Getting Started

Making this rosary craft is easy. Start with the Hail Mary beads, the ones that help your child keep track of how many times they have prayed “Hail Mary,” each representing a decade of prayer. Here’s how to start the process:

  • First, have your child pick out 10 beads in your first color to be the 10 Hail Mary beads. Thread these through the pipe cleaner, positioning them in the center.

  • Then, take the 2 ends of the pipe cleaner and twist them together where the beads end.

Our Father and Glory Be

The next section has to do with the Our Father beads, which represent the end of a century, and Glory Be beads, which represent another prayer. Here are the next steps of crafting the rosary:

  • Your child will pick a different color bead to be the Our Father and Glory Be bead.

  • Hold the two pieces of the pipe cleaner together and thread this through both ends. Now they’re ready to make the cross!

  • Pick one pipe cleaner end and bend it to the left, then halfway to the right to create a horizontal line.

  • Choose a new bead color and add 1 or 2 beads to each horizontal end of the cross. If the beads are too large, you may need to bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to hold them on securely.

  • Finally, add 3 more beads to the bottom, vertical part of the cross.

Explain As You Go

As you work each part of the rosary, take some time to teach your child the significance of each bead. Explain that relying on these beads can help us stay focused during prayer, clear our minds, and pray more intentionally. When your child chooses a new bead color, walk them through what this section of the rosary represents. Remind them that as we pray, we are meant to reflect and concentrate on God! This craft will give them a visual representation of each section, which can help them better remember the meaning of rosary. Faith-based education starts in the home, so we encourage parents to help their children understand these concepts.
